AIGA Type Forecast

Last Friday, AIGA/NY held a lecture featuring three type designers that if you don’t already know, than you should definitely get to know.

Probably the most visible of the three, Brooklyn’s own, Jessica Hische graciously talked about her process for developing her impeccable lettering skills and how she fell into to her Daily Drop Cap project. German-based type designer Georg Seifert told us about how he got tired working with FontLab, so he decided to just go and develop his own font application which he called Glyphs; which is just crazy! I just downloaded it now and can’t wait to play around with it! Finally, Joshua Darden of Brooklyn-based Darden Studio schooled us all in type history and what it takes to actually sit down and design a typeface. I feel dumb totally dumb for not knowing much about about this guy until now. He’s definitely the Neil deGrasse Tyson of the type design world, the guy is just too smart for his own good!

All in all, it was a great lecture which included the ever hilarious and equally awesome designer Matteo Bologna of Mucca Design as guest moderator. Totally worth the $30 bucks.

Air traffic and volcanos don’t mix well

This is crazy, I had heard that last months Eyjafjallajokull eruption caused some flight delays but I didn’t realize the extent until now. Though, I’m not sure which is crazier, seeing a total lack of flights through out a big chunk of Europe or the insane amount of flights that actually go on when things are normal.

Up There…

About a month ago I was walking through SOHO and I looked up and saw a team of guys painting this ad on the side of a building and couldn’t help but to just stop and watch them. It was memorizing the way they painstakingly used actual brush and paint to do what can essentially be outputted and installed in a fraction of time. The thing is… no one around me even seemed to appreciate the talent that was up there on the those scaffolds.

Then, just now, I stumbled across this short film by The Ritual Project called “Up There” that typifies the feeling I got while watching those guys do there thing… up there. Simply beautiful.

New Heads of State

Philly-based designers Heads of State recently released a new series of city inspired posters that make me want to go on a cross-country road trip, I particularly love that they choose three cities that I can claim as currently or at one time, home (Seattle, San Francisco and New York). Really lovely work… Check out the rest of the series here.

2009 Feltron Report

Yesterday I received my copy of the 2009 Feltron Report, the fifth installment in the Feltron Report series, in the mail and I’ve got to say Nicholas has outdone himself on this one! Nicholas’ informational prowess shines, as always. Beautifully printed by Brooklyn-based Swayspace and bound with a sweet stitch binding this is totally one to savor. Fortunately for Nicholas and unfortunately for anyone who was late in ordering it, the report has sold out. Don’t fret though, you can peruse through the piece in its entirety at Nicholas’ site. Awesome!

Something Out of Nothing.

Chosing to take a more philisophical approach to notebooking, About:Blank have come up with a nice one that, according to them, “is the pursuit of emptiness that gives people enough room for thoughts.” Pretty deep, huh? Moleskin, eat your heart out…

The Rules of a Gentleman

Minneapolis-besed web designer, Ryan Evans has developed a wonderfully simple site outlining various rules one should considering following to reach gentleman status. There a quite a few good ones and a couple really great ones. Here are some of my favorites…

Andy Pratt at Lyceum Spring Food & Craft Market

Over the weekend, I took a trip down to Park Slope to check out the Lyceum Spring Food & Craft Market where I ran into the very talented illustrator and fellow Supermarketeer, Andy Pratt. Nice guy and cool stuff. Check it out if you get a chance.
